Executive Center Director             

The Greater Ishpeming Commission on Aging (GICOA) is private 501 c 3 foundation that operates the Ishpeming Multi-Purpose Senior Center. The Senior Center is located in the City of Ishpeming and provides services and activities to those 60 years and older who reside in the City of Ishpeming and the Townships of Ishpeming, Ely, Tilden, Humboldt, Champion, Michigamme and Republic.

The Executive Center Director has oversight over the Ishpeming Multi-Purpose Senior Center, a brand new 7800 sq ft facility with an annual operating budget of approximately $325,000.

The Executive Center Director is employed by the GICOA Board and reports to the nine-member Board of Directors. 

General Responsibilities and Activities

This position provides ongoing support to the GICOA Board of Directors, is responsible for budgeting, programmatic and financial reporting, grant service management, administrative and office operations and represents the GICOA on a local and regional level.  In addition, the Executive Center Director is responsible for daily operations of the Senior Center including staffing, maintenance, activities and programming.



$20/hour; $21/hour after 90 days

40 hours/week; 8am to 4pm

Eight Paid Holidays, HRA Account, Paid Vacation, Sick Leave and Personal Days.



Bachelor’s Degree in public administration, social work, communications, public relations, or related field or equivalent experience.

1 to 3 years’ experience in an administrative and financial setting, customer relations, marketing/public relations, public administration, or public health related field.

Demonstrated experience in grant writing, administration, and evaluation.

Core Competencies

Outstanding customer service and written and oral communication skills.

Ability to work internally and externally with others to further the GICOA and to develop professional relationships with funders, grantees, agencies, community partners and foundations.

Ability to prioritize and accurately complete work in a timely manner.

Proficiency with computers and various software applications-including Word, Excel, QuickBooks, PowerPoint, WordPress, and social media platforms.

Ability to make maintain confidentiality regarding all aspects of the GICOA.


Grants and Service Responsibilities

Responsible for identifying, applying, writing and managing grants to support the mission of the GICOA.

Assure all grant protocols, procedures and applications are handled in accordance with GICOA policies and procedures and maintain confidentiality during the grant process.

Coordinate grant review process the Board of Directors.

Provide grant administration and oversight including reporting forms, attending training sessions, staff supervision and training, and recommending changes and improvements.

Assure that timely reporting and grant requirements are met.


Community Relations and Promotion Responsibilities

Maintain the GICOA website and social media accounts in accordance with all Relations Committee and in accordance with GICOA policies and as may be determined by the board.

Maintain an active presence on a state, regional and local level, especially in the West End of Marquette County.

Enhance professional growth and development by participating in relevant educational programs, workshops, and professional conferences.

Strengthen relationships and partnerships to promote the GICOA in a positive manner. Serve on committees and enter into partnerships with professional organizations the align with the GICOA’s mission.

Assist with the organizing, scheduling, programming, photography, invitations, and public announcements on behalf of the GICOA and Ishpeming Multi-Purpose Senior Center.


Board Support

Prepare the Board’s annual calendar, meeting agendas, Board member documents and documents review schedule.

Schedule Board and committee meetings, prepare calendar invites, and take notes and/or prepare minutes in absence of Bookkeeper or as needed.

Prepares draft correspondence, documents, policies, etc. for effective operation of the GICOA.


Financial Accountability Responsibilities

Work with Bookkeeper to maintain accurate financial records.

Provide supervision for the use of Medlin, QuickBooks or other financial software.

Review monthly bank statements including cancelled checks and deposits.

Prepare financial reports and budget updates as needed.

Assist the Finance Committee in scheduling meetings, preparing budgets and reviewing GICOA financial status and planning.


Administrative Responsibilities

Maintain regular office hours 8am to 4pm; 40 hours per week.

Interact with all Ishpeming Senior Center guests, patrons, clients and GICOA office visitors in a welcoming and efficient manner and provide excellent customer service.  Provide information to those inquiring about the Senior Center and GICOA and its programs.

Regularly appropriately handle all GICOA and Senior Center mail.

Secure necessary supplies, equipment, and services for the effective and efficient operation of the Ishpeming Multi-Purpose Senior Center.

Maintain all GICOA records, office files, and organizational systems used by the GICOA.

Assist with the securing of sponsors, participants and prizes for special events-including raffle license application.


Physical Demands and Work Environment

Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

The majority of the workday is spent in the Ishpeming Multi-Purpose Senior Center which is indoors and climate controlled.  This position requires attendance and duties at a variety of activities, events and meetings.  Duties may include set-up and arrangement of tables, chairs and other equipment and refreshments for Senior Center Activity or event along with returning all items to normal state after an activity/event is completed. Must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time, have manual dexterity to operate computer and phone systems, be able to bend and kneel, and to carry items up to 35 pounds. Travel is generally not required beyond Marquette County but participation in regional and state conferences, committees and professional development may require in-state travel.  Communication methods are varied but are primarily made via telephone, email, and in-person.

Homemaker Aide - hours available vary and scheduling is flexiible. All Homemaking is provided during the Senior Center's regular hours of operation (M-F, 8 am to 4 pm). Current rate of pay is $12.50/hr plus $2.5/hour Hazard Pay.
